Session 1: Magazine Analysis

In this session, I developed my assignments during the winter break. I chose two types of magazines ‘DAZED’ and ‘VOGUE British’. These magazines were totally different. Until now, I only looked at magazines of my choice, focusing on their visual appeal. But I was able to know that detailed structure of the magazines in this time.

First, I analyzed VOGUE British. This magazine is very standard and the basis of elegance. The overall format was coherent, simple and sophisticated, with a variety of page types. In contrast, DAZED is an eccentric and unconventional composition. I was surprised by the freedom of expression of this magazine and found it very interesting, as the content and methods of expression it deals with are not yet completely free in Japan. This was a magazine, but the art-like format was very interesting. The work was art and connected on every pages, so I never got tired of looking at it. The content covered was also very close to youth culture, which I thought would be of interest to readers. I think that it is most important. Through DAZED, the potential for different forms of expression could be seen.

It was found thorough the analysis work that there are different types of the same fashion magazine, creating different content. After I analyzed the each magazines, I created image board of each magazines, which enable an analysis of the type people who read each of them. This led me to suggest that the most important thing is to clearly define the type of reader for whom the magazine is intended.
