Session 7: Words and Pictures [Creating Narrative]

In this session, I used the photos so far to come up with a layout with text. In order to make the photos and text relevant, I first created a story for photos. I thought that writing long sentences was not a good first impression for the visuals, so I aimed for structure them in short, concise sentences.

The text for this work was taken from the lyrics of a Japanese singer. I wanted to give the visuals a slightly pale and gentle feel, so I processed the photos first to make them brighter. I wanted to emphasise each letter of the lyrics, so I placed them randomly. I also cut out the footprints accordingly and made the layout so that the footprints could be pieced together one by one. (The process of development)

In these edits, we were conscious of using the same photographs to create different compositions. Overall, we used red, black and white to create a strong and impactful visual. The content used was the lyrics. One part of the lyrics contains the word ‘Christmas’, and the image colour of Christmas is red, so we made that part of the lyrics red. In the work on the right, I wanted to create movement in the photo of the flowers, so I modified it. This gave a cohesive look to the overall image.
Through this work, I felt that it was difficult to make a strong connection between the meaning of the word and the visual and to create an impression. However, there is a mutual effect between the two, and when the images match each other, I felt that I could create a work that left a deep impression. I would like to record any images or words that come to mind when I take photos in the future.
